Water Well Project
Mpasa is a district town in Kinshasa located minutes away from Ndjili International Airport; like most expanding district towns in Kinshasa, Mpasa is faced with electricity shortage gross irregularities in the water supply system. Mpasa has a high level of poverty; the district has six water wells, including ours.
In 2013 the European Union installed a standpipe in the area; the standpipe is now unattended. Water is not accessible to everyone; affordability is a big issue. As a result, many people use grand water sources. There is little information on the extent and quality of surface and groundwater resources in the area
According to the World Bank, 43% of households in the Democratic Republic of Congo have access to safe drinking water (69% in urban areas, 23% in rural areas), and only 20% have access to sanitation. Provision of water supply and sanitation systems in urban centres of Congo is a challenge that has generally remained unmet.
Having close ties to the local community of Mpasa, we decided to build our own Water Well to support the community. We drilled 100 meters into the ground to access water contained in an aquifer. Once the hole was drilled, a pipe and a pump to pull water out of the ground was installed. We use a screen to filter out unwanted particles in the water.
We officially opened our Water well in 2020; currently, we can produce 5,000 litres of clean water per day. As this project is self-funded, we charge locals 100 CDF(equivalent to £0.38) for 5-litre of water to cover the maintenance cost.
Our mission is to one day provide free clean drinking water for the local community of Mpasa. Our ambitions go further then just providing clean water, we want to boost the local economy and promote environmental and sustainable practices in DRC
